Isn't it great to live in a country where you're still free enough to make such a ridiculous statement? Comparing the success of America to that of N Korea, USSA, and Cuba...really? I'm speechless...but good luck with all that.

This is central planning as well, courtesy of the FED and Congress.

Of all the smells in all the countries that I've visited, nothing screams "This ain't Kansas anymore" like multiple Kimchee pots on a hot summer day in Korea. Despite the putrid smell, it really does eat much better than it smells. On my first deployment to Korea, my boss wisely instructed me that the only way to stop the stink is to start eating Kimchee. Sure enough, daily consumption of Kimchee seemed to make the smell go away, or more acurately, made me not notice the smell like I did when I was NOT a Kimchee eater. Not unlike when you're in the field for a couple weeks without a proper shower, as long as everyone around you is equally ripe, you really don't notice the smell much but once a properly bathed individual is introduced to the equation, you suddenly realize that you're rocking some serious pungent man musk.

Does this kimchee taste like saurkraut or like cooked cabbage, or maybe even cole slaw?

None of the above, you really cannot describe the taste,go to an asian store and buy a small jar.

I think I'll do just that and pick up some, as there are several asian markets around here. It never occured to me that you could buy it, as I thought every family had to make it.

Definitely a hard taste to describe but I'll give it a shot. The cabbage itself is still rather crisp, unlike cooked cabbage or sauerkraut. There is however a sourish, pickled sort of a taste but not as pronounced as the pickled taste of sauerkraut. Spicy (i.e. cayenne pepper) and garlic is the prounounces flavor. As you've probably already figured out, it's fairly pungent and probably not your ideal date food but it is delicious.

I love how a thread that started out as an announcement of the death of the littlest tyrant turned into a nice discussion of kimchee.
