I don't think I'd have an issue living in some of the cities in mainland Europe, such as Salzberg or Vienna

I miss living in the country, when gunshots meant that the Finch's oldest son was sighting in his rifle, not that some gangster wanted some other gangster's car. I don't even live in a bad neighborhood... the worst crime we've had in 12 years was our truck getting stolen 2x, and some crazy man shooting his ex-wife. There's some gang-ridden apartments south of here, but other than that, its a nice place to live. Except that it is in the damn city.

I like having everything 15 minutes away, but it was just as nice an hour away only minus the gangs.
You mention gangs and gangsters twice, and I think therein lies the problem, I live right NYC,about 29 Min's.away, and back in the day if you heard shooting it was because someone saw a rat,NO gangs or gangsters,I think THAT makes all the difference,IMHO

The homicide rate is higher in rural Indiana than in the urban areas, just say'n.

Crazy people from the cities have no problem packing their belongings and joining their rural counterparts who do not get along with other people and just want to isolate themselves from the rest of the world.

I have been thinking about retiring to a remote village in South America where I can grow my own fruits and vegetables year-round. Even though I have met some really wonderful people in my visits to the area, there are many more wonderful people right here in urban America that I would be leaving behind and that is a real concern to me. The Internet may help to bridge the miles, but the personal contact with such diverse acquaintances of urban America will be sorely missed.
