Didn't I see a post somewhere that Barbers aren't allowed to use straights because of the sterilizing issue?

Not saying this is true everywhere.

I'm certain that this has been talked to death on this forum and I remember talking it to death in the old Yahoo groups 0ver ten years back. Different states have different laws. The reason that laws get passed have very little to do with reality and more to do with public sentiment. Barbers in many states are allowed to use straight razors, but they must be sterilized between uses (which is fairly easy to do) just like they do with all their scissors and combs. These laws have been in effect for the last century at least. In other states, they are only allowed to use a disposable blade razor and are only allowed to use it on one customer.

What barbers are not allowed to do under any circumstances is use the same brush, mug, and shaving soap puck on more than one customer. In the old days, each customer had his own brush and mug that he kept at his barbershop. When he went in for a shave the barber would use the customer's mug and brush. The reason for this was that brushes could not be effectively sterilized between uses.

I guess that's why they bypassed the shaving mug and used the lather machine.

What do they do? Apply the lather by hand?

As you can tell, I've never had a barber shave.
