    Default Nanny State Strikes Again!

So when I lived in Texas I knew they had a similar law but I thought the Sunshine State was a bit more enlightened. Apparently I was wrong. I went to the supermarket this morning to pick up a few things for Sunday dinner. With the weather being quite warm I thought a 12 pack of beer was in order. Apparently there is no selling of beer authorized on Sunday before 1100. Had they sold me the beers I would not have drank any until this afternoon anyway. A couple things:

    1. If I was going to church, drinking a few cold ones on the way would probably not even be a consideration

    2. If I was a raging alcoholic, a rough Saturday night would probably keep me in bed until well after 1100.

    3. If I was not a raging alcoholic (and I'm not mind you) and just felt like a few cold ones with my bacon and eggs, as long as I'm not driving or hurting anyone, why would that be anyone's business but my own?

And we actually have the stones to call this a free country. The founding fathers are likely spinning in their graves at what has become of our country.

I drink my fair share of beer. (sometimes I dip into others share too! ) I never understood the law. It is noon here in Texas. I have not ever had it bother me, tho. We usually stock up on Saturday if a cookout or other activities require cold beer before noon on Sun. It is a leftover from the "Blue Laws", shutting things down on Sunday so the Baptists can head to church uninterrupted. They can then stop at the corner store and get some beer after noon as they are on their way home from church!

It could be worse. You could live in a dry town.

I did do quite a bit of bootlegging during the 6 months I managed to survive living in the dry town. Luckily, I now live where I am at most a five minute walk from 6 bars.

I never understood those laws, if a store is open and sells alcohol they should be able to sell it no matter what time it is. I understand not selling to someone who is intoxicated but in your case you just want some beer to enjoy later in the day. Seems stupid but what do we know, we are just citizens...

It used to be much worse in Texas than it is now. There was a whole list of things that you weren't allowed to buy on Sunday. Cleaning supplies of all things.

I remember walking through the grocery store and seeing certain aisles roped off. Very stupid, and finally repealed. After MANY years and MANY votes Irving FINALLY got the right to sell beer and wine in grocery stores.

This is one large reason why Cowboy Stadium moved to Arlington, not that I miss it.

They probably made their own beer, thus making what day of the week to drink only dependent on the age of the brew.

Why not? Don't these people believe in Jesus? I thought he was famous for his wine drinking and heavy partying with social outcasts.

    religion - check

Just wait until the nanny state bans abortions too.

Anything else highly divisive and controversial to bring up? Guns perhaps?

Got my beer and am enjoying a frosty even as we speak. So yeah, the law isn't so much a show stopper but you know, it's the principle of the thing. I might just be getting crochety in my old age but I'm a grown ass man, I don't need anyone to tell me what to do. Let alone the damn government, they can't even handle the business they're suppose to be handling, let alone tell me how to do my own business.

Token inflamatory political statement just for Gugi: Banning abortions, what's the problem with that? Defending babies yes, attempting to run the lives of grown people, not so much. Does it strike anyone else as strange that I can shoot a dog in my own yard and get sent to jail but killing a defenseless baby is seen as a constitutional right?
