Also known as African Lion Hound. They were bred for hunting lions in southern Africa in the late 18th century. Their breed standard was codified and 1924. They are a very large incredibly powerful breed that is considered a primitive breed. Mixed between the large European hounds and the half wild ridged dogs used by the Hottentot (khoikhoi) people. Extremely smart, independent and courageous as you would expect from a lion hunter. Max is 30 and 1/2 in at the withers which is the top of the front shoulders and 120 lb. In those pictures he was still pretty young so he wasn't as big as he is now. He's within the breed standard for a Great Dane as far as size In fact I have seen Great Danes that he was bigger than. Small ones of course.
    Here's a good ridge picture.

The claw I'm holding in my hand is a black bear claw. The other of course is Max's foot.

Our breeder, and I think most responsible ones interviewed us first to see if we were able to keep him because they are not recommended for inexperienced dog owners due to their size, power, and independent nature. If you can manage them though they are a fantastic dog. Smart, loyal, and very protective. I would not recommend trying to break into my house. By the same token, with his family he is a giant baby.

But the short answer is yes, Rhodesian Ridgeback. I know you didn't really ask for all of that but that was just my opportunity to give my little spiel

It's been quite a few years since I posted in this thread, so I figured I'd post an updated pic of me and my daughter.

Cute pic Theseus-It's funny the weird images of people we imagine. I always pictured you just like your avatar: the dog in a sailor hat with a beer (occasionally honing razors and shaving with them too)-glad to see you don't actually look like that lol!

And Paul-Nice doggie. Though I get that our Canuck friends are into hockey, it always bemuses me, the whole idea of Floridians being into it too-I guess it's cool around the ice? Kind of like the Jamaican Bobsled Team.
There are many roads to sharp.

Yes......but it was really cool to learn a little more about Max, and the bear claw comparison was pretty awesome "WoW". I think it's nice to learn a little about a person to go along with the photos. I enjoyed it! Thank you
