It is fun isn't it! Because we live in a democracy and vote be it with these idea's on top of mind or not, it's important to think them threw I think. The one that's really killing me is how violent crime dropped so dramatically in America the 90"s. People have all kinds of theory's! Broken window effect, carry laws, etc, etc... what I want to know is if secularism rose in the 90's!!

    Maybe that's the answer?

You are using Aristotelian logic in a post-Galilean world, my friend. Specifically, you are referring to Aristotle's formal cause.

How's this for a factor: "Percentage of nation that believes in heaven minus percentage that believes in hell".....

I'm still trying to wrap my head around that one, considering all religions preach about consequences (ie - hell or equivalent) if dogmatic beliefs aren't strictly adhered to. In other words, no religious person will believe in heaven but not hell. Me thinks this chart has been skewed to direct the results to fit someone's agenda.

I'm not that familiar w/Judaism, but my understanding is that they don't believe in Hell per se.
Could someone chime in and clarify this?

I think you are right - not sure. Actually, I think Hell and the concept behind it, really "took off" after Dante's inferno thing. About the 14th century?

*Wait - the idea of hell is in the Old Testament isn't it?

You are correct per se , but there are still afterlife consequences for misdeeds:

Also, it is my understanding that Hindus don't have a concept of Hell, either, nor Shintoism. Been a loooong time since my REL 200 class as an undergrad. Feel free to correct my statement as I'm always willing to learn, but on this subject as an atheist I really don't care. No offence intended.
