Thanked: 79After more than ten years on the bleeding edge of MS technologies, I switched all my personal devices to OS X and iOS 5+ years ago. For work-related purposes, I maintain a few Windows environments, incl. 8, via VMWare Fusion and Parallels. There are also several Windows Servers 2008 that I log in to and control via RDP or Citrix, and I am running some T&E on Server 2012 at this time.
In Windows 8, MS has taken some good ideas from OS X, like the launchpad, and created a more or less stable and visually somewhat pleasing version of a hybrid desktop/tablet OS. They are obviously seeing the future of personal computing in tablet/touchscreen devices, and Windows 8 features and UI are purposed accordingly, but there is absolutely nothing in there that would make it compelling for me to switch from OS X, or even for that matter from Windows 7.

'Another 'nix fan, since '99. The latest Gnome3 'menuless' UI has been out for at least a year. I had strong negative reactions, but I'm hearing Win 8 does much of the same. I'm also having an easier time w/ the Gnome 3.
'Good for me to hear the talk about Win 7 vs 8. I'll have to eventually move to a Win drive for work. Sounds like there's no real reason to bother w/ 8. Maybe 9 will be some improvement.

Have been using Windows 8 for 2 days now. It no longer exists on my HDD anymore. It is terrible! It is all touch oriented, and makes things really difficult to use. If only Ubuntu would work on my Monitor, it would be my daily driver. I'm stuck with windows 7 now, although it is not bad, I like Ubuntu better!

I haven't tried it.
And I won't untill I have no choice. Sticking with XP for as long as I could get it to work and get a decent copy meant that I completely skipped over Win Vista.
With some things I want the latest and greatest. With an operating system I'm more of the "don't fix it if it aint broke" philosophy.

I tried it, and it will be a new improved Vista. Great news for alternative OS adoption. Even Steam is looking to get out on the Linux platform in eager anticipation of Windows 8 release.
You may wanna try Linux Mint with Cinnamon or MATE (try both, see which one you like better). Other desktop environment alternatives are XFCE and LXDE. I've worked with all of those and sticking with Cinnamon, but wouldn't mind either. All follow the WIMP paradigm and are easy to work with. Cinnamon might need a couple of easily available extensions, but works great for me.
