Thanked: 334The Battle of Queenston Heights
Today marks the 200th anniversary of the British victory over the Unitedstatestians at Queenston Heights, Ontario.
Take that, Yankee invaders!
Battle of Queenston Heights, 13 October 1812
At Queenston Heights and Lundy's Lane
Our brave fathers, side by side,
For freedom, homes, and loved ones dear,
Firmly stood and nobly died.
And those dear rights which they maintained,
We swear to yield them never.
Our watchword evermore shall be,
The Maple Leaf forever!Last edited by mapleleafalumnus; 10-13-2012 at 10:20 AM.

I can't get the link to work MLA.
Either way, I always get a kick out of 1812 lore... "Canada" wasn't really even a nation, and a large number of the eventual settlers were "Yanks" loyal to England. Moreover, the people who really won the war for the territory, were first nation peoples. And we all know how we thanked them LOL.
What a kill-joy eh lol?
I like to dwell on the whole - longest undefended boarder part that came after.

They have Isaac Brock's coat on display at the war museum here in Ottawa which raises two things:
1) no way he had any final words at all: that shot would have killed instantly
2) he was just a little guy! Word on the street is that he was considered relatively tall for his time too.
I'm torn on the question of commemorating the war of 1812. On the one hand it is very important to remember our past. But on the other our current government has latched on to it as a propaganda tool, spending *millions* of dollars we can't afford to play the patriotic card in events located in places that had absolutely nothing to do with the war. It should be remembered, but it should be remembered in a balanced way.
And I'll start doing that just after this from the legendary Three Dead Trolls in a Baggie...
It was in original condition, faded red, well-worn, but nice.
This was and still is my favorite combination; beautiful, original, and worn.

aboot... he he... Have you ever seen the South Park movie?
I'll work on it. May take a while though as I struggle to get my thoughts anywhere beyond cold remedies these days. Hang on... it all makes sense to me now! This is the Unitedstatesians' revenge for the White House thing: lure Canucks into the Adirondacks with gorgeous fall colours, then cripple them with devastating colds that just won't go away. A fiendishly simple plan, yet so effective.
