Default Reverse off shoring of jobs?

China has been in the news a lot lately and much talked about here as well. It is bad enough to have lost jobs by off shoring but to loose them in your own country by "reverse off shoring" ie importing labour from China is a lot harder to swallow. This is the situation as reported by CTV News Coal mine looked for Chinese workers at lower pay, union tells court | CTV News .

I believe most countries will allow temporary foreign workers in if there are no qualified citizens of that country to fill the positions. On the face of it that is fair enough. If the CTV report is true, I see two things that upset me. The first is that the company set as part of it's hiring requirements that the applicants speak Mandarin, up to 300 of them. I know we are a diverse country but it just might be impossible to find 300 Mandarin speaking Canadian citizens with the specific set of job skills required by the company. That alone might make it possible to say there are not enough Canadian citizens qualified on that point alone. The second point is that they will be working for $10.00 to $17.00 @ hour less than workers at near by mines are making, if the CTV report is true.

I don't care what you think of unions but I hope they win their court case.

The love of money is the root of all evil. The citizenry of Canada ought to take the management team whose idea it was and tar and feather them and ride them out of the country on a rail.

That's why I'm up for unions. Not perfect, but they will curtail some of the corporate greed that goes on unchecked and rampage. Double O

It works all ways - we have a company building several gas refineries here and apparently it is better for them to have US workers fly over for 3 months, then fly them back for 3 months to the US for R&R than it is to train and employ locally.

Cheap US workers are killing the Aussie economy! Therr tekkin errr jerbs!!!!

    lol

I remember years ogo whe asbestos removal was big, there was a South Korean company that was winning all the bids.. It turned out that they could bid lower because they didn't provide the safety gear needed by the employees... When asked why they said they only hired guys in the late forties and fifties to work, because it took thirty to forty years for asbestos poisoning to show up... The employees would be dead of old age before they had to treat them for asbestos..

Damn right man. And worrying about what will kill you will kill you even faster. Just live and enjoy, let the reaper worry about when he'll take you.

Yes, but you don't have to sneak up in front of that final queue.

reverse whatever you want to call it has been going on for years. Companies create a job description so narrow there are no people to fill it so they can bring people into the U.S to fill jobs. back in the 1980s a company called General Atomic started this by petitioning for groups of engineers from India. They brought them in 40 at a time and paid them half of what a U.S worker got. The people would come to the U.S and quickly find a better paying job and transfer and they would repetition all over again.

Yea, it has been going on for a long time and it is way past due for the abuses to cease. Firstly I have nothing against having temporary foreign workers fill needed gaps in staffing requirements. Several restrictions should be severely enforces though. The first being that they are only allowed to work at the job for which they were originally granted temporary work visas for a fixed period of time. At the end of that fixed time they must return home and repetition from there. The employer must actively recruit and train citizens of the country to do the jobs filled by temporary workers. Companies should be heavily fined if they write job descriptions so narrow as to virtually preclude the vacancies being filled by citizens of the country they operate in.

    That's a great fairy tale.

Pretty much all of that is already in the law. However when lawyers get involved and start pushing and conniving, well you know the story.

The Immigration and Nationality Act is bigger than the Tax Codes and has more holes than Swiss Cheese.
