What would happen if there were no unions ..... oh everything would be peachy ..... for the entreprenuers. Not so great for the workers.

Note the last sentence in the news account,"A union organizer, Aminul Islam, who campaigned for better working conditions and higher wages, was found tortured and killed outside Dhaka this year"

yes but if the factory wasn't there they would all be living on the street and probably be dead from disease or starvation so fire or not they come out ahead of the game.

    That's what many will say.

Yea, a thought pattern right out of the good old Colonial days. I guess that never really went away sadly.

If the workers owned the means of production, that factory would never have been moved from the US.

Tazreen Fashion, a unit of textile manufacturer Tuba Group, employs 1,200 workers and exports goods worth $36 million a year, mainly to the U.S. and Europe, according to the company’s website. The factory that burned down has produced apparel for Li & Fung (494), whose clients include Wal-Mart and Target Corp. (TGT) Li & Fung, a Hong Kong-based outsourcer, has said it is in contact with the factory’s owner and that it will conduct its own investigation.

vicious circle . in the local shanghai walmart we have crocodiles full size in the meat dept. went there when it was new to have a look.
Ya know even in china only poor people shop at wally world . and the quality offered here is even worse then in the states.

the Gap between have and have not is enormous and its not going to ever get better.

I read that japanese business is starting to try to focus on producing the best most innovative and high tech products for only wealthy consumers and leave mass producing garbage to the rest of the world Ie china and india. they think its the only way forward for their economy.

    What is americas plan?

Simple, raise taxes for the wealthy, more government oversight, more deficit spending, and more people dependent on the government.

I don't think any country has a plan, they just make it up as they go.

The U.S. patterns are reminiscent of Stalin's 5-year NEP's from the 1930s -- which were revamped every 3 years. The differences here are a new President every 4 years or so, and a new Congress every 2 years, each of which attempt to implement their "new" programmes.
I don't have the answers, and I don't perceive myself as the problem, either. We all want high-quality goods at inexpensive prices. Does anyone else notice the dichotomy?
    BTW, I am pro-union.
