What kind of work are you doing? Most can do basic function well, but if you need to do process intensive work then you want to take that into consideration. If just basic internet work and typing then almost whatever will do. Also know what you will need for programs because that may make you have to upgrade to a different level of operating system.

I would think a tablet might be your best bet for portability. I got my Thinkpad T420 at the recommendation of mvcrash and I am very happy with it after more than a year of flawless performance.

I am supper hard on everything I own. It's kind of become a standing joke with my family. Hence, when I look for laptops - tough always comes to mind. With your being out on the road, I think you would be in the same market for tough.
I too got a Thinkpad. I don't know what model it is anymore. It was dear as sin, but I'll say this, short of a Panasonic Toughbook, these Lenovo Thinkpads are awesome - and tough.
I am with JimmyHAD - great product.David

You wanna cheap or you wanna good?
Cheap? Get an Acer. Decent for the money if you treat it well.
Good: Get an ASUS. They're a lot more pricey but they have a very good warrantee and use only the best hardware.
Flashy: Get an Apple....anything really. you'll pay through the nose for the design. But I understand they're also very good devices.
Fast: Get something like a Samsung Ultrabook. Very thin and very fast machines. You'll also pay through the nose though.
If you want a Tablet that'll allow access to your files. Get either a Windows 8 or an Android Tablet. Either will allow you access to the root of your device.
