Armed guards and metal detectors only stop honest people from commiting acts of mayhem; they have no effect on the deranged or the lawless. much the same as locked door only stop honest people from entering your house at night the dishonest often are not even slightly inconvenienced.
perhaps instead of mainstreaming the ill they should be placed in facilities to protect themselves and others from harm.

Israel provides protection at its schools. You have to fight the symptoms until you can cure the disease and once again I believe the disease is a mental health issue.

Israel has been under near constant threat since it came into being as a nation by external forces both regular military and terrorist activity. There is not much Israel can do about that except take precautions like they do. That is a far cry from having to take similar precautions against what your own citizens might do. That is a little disappointing but you are right that in the US you are now at the point where you need to do that hopefully while at the same time working on managing the root causes such as mental health issues. Hope you can do that.

I take it as saying that the Average American has given up on the issue. Apparently people here cared about gun control more four years ago.

The true incident to cause this supertanker to alter course has not occurred yet. That is yet to come. As true as the sun will rise in the morning it will happen. What form it will take or the casualties suffered we can only guess. However, rest assured it will happen.

You all know it's about the cost-benefit analysis system. How many will have to die in a single incident to cause a real change.

Yes, in the first place, perhaps Israeli kids are more respectful than American kids.

David, go ahead and turn in your semi-auto's. IF you don't want to turn them in perhaps you should sell them or throw them in the lake either way it doesn't matter to me.

I haven't changed my view on this nor will I.

This is not about guns. This is about control and the EVIL so called ASSAULT WEAPONS are the vehicle that is being used at the moment.

Personally, I have a hard time believing that the country's views on gun control have changed. Either way it doesn't matter to me as my opinion has not.

It is not the first time we have had to do things like this either, and a threat is a threat, the source does not matter. It must be met. As we both seem to realize, it is a mental heath issue, an issue yet to be addressed.

As always, "The price of Liberty is eternal vigilance.".

Once again an entry from the genuinely curious files...

There seems to be very widespread concern amongst many US Citizens about 'threats'. The very fact that such a heinous crime took place as that which spurred this discussion would itself seem to confirm the presence of at least one kind of threat.

And once again before asking my questions, I'd like to say that as Wullie said, I really don't have a horse in this race and so I'm not pushing an agenda on either side of the debate. I'm genuinely trying to understand what's going on in our nearest neighbour.

Threats: what threats do *you* perceive? Have the nature of these threats, or their seriousness changed over, say, the last 30-50 years? If they have, why do you think they have? (I suspect the answers to this last question may hold the keys to solving or at least lessening the incidence of violent crimes such as this)

I'm fascinated by this because in so very many ways Canadian and American culture are very similar. Yet in some ways it is *completely* different. And apart from a couple of guys at work who have mapped escape routes from their homes in the event of the zombie apocalypse, I honestly don't know anyone up here who perceives anywhere near the level of threat that I see coming through in so many posts here. And it isn't a gun thing as many Canadians (myself included) own firearms. But I know of only one person amongst my friends, colleagues, and acquaintances who keeps a weapon at the ready for the purpose of defense. Every other gun owner I know has them for collecting, target shooting, and (by far most commonly) hunting.

So what is it that you perceive as a threat?

Again, I'm not trying to wind anyone up or take sides, I am genuinely interested in trying to understand this.

There are murderous idiots out there killing people, worse yet there are those who would politicize it for gain. These are legitimate threats IMO.
