Thanked: 247So, I was given this challenge....
We went to Disney recently, and I was offered a challenge to be photographed lathered up and straight shaving in the Pirates of the Caribbean ride after I posted up this image.
Attachment 112296
Let me start off by saying I had the best intentions....
There were a number of problems inherent with this challenge, and I will share a few with you.
1. They search your bags as you enter the park. Knowing this, I knew that I would have some serious problems attempting to carry in a shave ready razor. There would be numerous questions...and none of them would I be able to produce a decent answer for. Imagine the look on the security officer's face when I explain that I was hoping to pull this razor out on a "boat" loaded with ~20 other people after lathering my face. What you YOU think if some dude with white froth all around his mouth whipped out a glimmering Spanish point next to you in a dark room on a boat. I had a plan for this...
2. The water in the ride is not conducive to lathering. I am not sure what the chemicals are, but they would NOT allow the cream to lather...perhaps someone, prior to my visit, thought it would be clever to add soap and cause the ride to become a foamy mess, so Disney figured out what chemicals would best prevent this from ever happening again?...perhaps.
3. It is possible to take a photo of the animations in the ride, and it is possible to photograph the person next to you in the boat. However, due to the darkness of the ride, it seemed completely impossible to capture in a single photo myself shaving, and the background proving that I was doing it while riding Pirates of the Caribbean.
My lovely wife is filtering through the photos from the vacation and will do her best to show what I was able to accomplish....you will have to bear with me, as we had a very good time and will require some time to update our families and friends with perhaps more interesting photos before we get to these.
What I will hope to show in these photos (if any turn out) is me dry shaving (because the creme would NOT lather and I had limited time to pull this off while passengers around me wondered WTF I was doing. Because I knew it would be far too difficult to explain a straight, I prepared by regrinding a wharncliffe bladed folding pocket knife. This edge was as close to shave ready as a person could hope to get, I lowered the bevel angles to achieve ~15 degrees inclusive, and polished it out to 12,000 grit before stropping it in much the same way I would hone and prepare a razor. My thinking was, carrying a basic (appearing) pocket knife into the park would be a much simpler feat to pull off....and in fact it was. The guard saw my knife and said nothing. Further, I only shaved my cheeks down to my chin line...sorry, I am not that skilled yet to shave in the dark with no mirror.
Anyway, I thought I would share...
Oh, and as a bonus I learned about something new the next day...non-lathering shaving cream. My wife purchased me a tub of this stuff at one of the stores on the Disney property. If I had it, it would have made the shave a bit more comfortable....but probably less effective. I may write a formal review, but suffice to say, this was 20 bucks wasted. This cream works poorly at best with a bare blade....I presume that most here would already know this?
Anyway, thanks for reading.
As a bonus for those who stayed, I will post up an image of me eating a turkey leg while riding the Space Mountain roller coaster. If any of you have ridden this ride, you will understand that holding onto a greasy turkey leg while on this ride is no small feat.
We has a BLAST!

That is an awesome story! Loved those rides, but i was never there when i was shaving. For your next trip, I would see if you could lather on the climb of terror tower and shave before you hit bottom...
... Don't sue me if you attempt this ...

Well if I ever try this I guess I will have to bring bottled water....
Shaving with facial hair is like a golfcourse. It's a challenge of rough and fairways. You are the skilled greenskeeper of your face?

Well,,,,,, I would have to give you a "W" for a puck of William's Shave soap,,,
Not quite sure if you failed the requirements of the challenge though, the Awards Committee will meet this weekend in my living-room & decide if you qualified for an "A" as in Art of Shaving Lavender Cream.
PM me a name & address to receive whatever the Awards Committee decides on.
Oh, BTW, had Columbus pondered half as much as you did, before he stepped off the Santa Maria onto the New World, there would not have been a Disney World for you.
