My 14yr old neice was mouthing off to my wife. So i told her she wasnt to big to go over my knee. And thats exactly what i did when see mouthed back to me. My brother and my sister inlaw had no problem with it, and a hour or so my neice came and apologised to me and my wife.
Its about Respect and they need to learn it.

Lot's of views here so figure I would chime. First, sorry for what happened, I might have lost it. Second, I am on the side that this could be a positive learning experience for the kid. Finally, I wonder why her attitude was so blasé. Makes me think she had motives for doing what she did.

With teenagers, everything is blase. Her reaction to the incident was also typical teenager.

You also have to consider this. your kids are your parents revenge on you.

I have to agree with Mick, restitution is necessary as well as some positive reinforcement.

Give her mother the option of paying for the restoration or having the daughter lap two barber hones.

Swap the 'or' for 'and' I reckon.

IMO, the O.P is the one at fault, not the child.
+1.... Even some adults need supervision around tools & weapons.
I'd suggest old carpet or rubber matting in your work area. It can mean the difference between a slight touchup or a blade fragmenting if it hits the deck.

I wonder how I would protect an idiot child from the tools and things in my garage. I could say it's out of bounds, but that would be like waving a red flag at a bull with some teenagers. Perhaps if they learn the lesson the hard way by hurting themselves on the lathe or with any number of sharp knives and other power tools I have hanging around down there, the lesson might be driven home to listen and think. Sometimes people just expect a little consideration and respect be given to them and their possessions. If the child had have given herself a nasty cut for her foolishness, I wonder what would have happened them. Would they blame the childs stupidity, her up-bringing or poor mate Magpie for having a hobby that involved restoration of sharp objects?
The child should be punished and people should be able to be accorded respect, until they prove themselves unworthy of it. The child has proved herself unworthy of some of that respect that should normally be accorded to her, thus punishment in the form of restitution (work/full payment/both).

Hiding ? My brain has gone blank on that one . Filling in the blanks........picture kid hanging upside down like a deer....strop dripping with blood... a few other things Magpie was probably visualizing.
I am all for spanking ! Sorry all you who think there are better ways but I have yet to see them. My father never beat the tar out of me but I did learn that , If I screwed up when I knew full well I shouldn't have, I got punished. Kids now grow up learning they will get a stern talking to when they do bad things. It's no wonder we have a society that is going down the toilet with no respect for anything and less for each other. I had to delete the other 3 pages of rant and end it here. :<0)

Sorry mate, other terms would be ass whoopin', wale on their backside, a kick up the ass...I'm trying to stick with American phrases because I don't think anyone outside of the commonwealth would understand me saying I would give 'em a clip on the 'ginger beer', shove a a foot up their khyber pass, go crook, get off me bike or flip me lid...
