    Default Hipster vs old school

    I have kinda a random comment/question.

In the past 2 years i've changed my style quit a bit. I've started dressing a bit better(more sweaters, button up shirts ect) grown out a mustache, and taken up pipe smoking. Now i've always been a music freak and have always been one of those guys who is all over bands 2 yrs. before anyone else has heard them. I've been trying to go for more of a classic mans man look or an Old school look.

In the last two weeks a bunch of my friends including (swmbo) have decided to start calling me a hipster! They don't get the old school look, and there's a lot of hipsters in my town that do dress very similar to the way I do/love music/smoke a pipe ect.

Now with that being said I don't really care what they say, just wondering if anyone else has experienced this? Im 28 for the record. Are there any other younger guys trying to class up there dress a bit out there?

    Walks like a duck, etc.

Have you considered that the people around town who are dressing like you might have the same concerns and interests as you do?

Perhaps you need to review your apparent distain for hipsters. Now that you appear to be one of them, they may not be as bad as you have thought they were. :-)

A question... Why the change of life for you?

Same thing happens to me. Here is the key. Hipsters are looking for the attention. Classy gentlemen let the comment fly. Its only words so let them say what they want. If you want to sport a classic look then be classy about it and don't let the comments get to you.

Shaving with facial hair is like a golfcourse. It's a challenge of rough and fairways. You are the skilled greenskeeper of your face?

Buddy, if you even have the terms "hipster" or "old school" in your head then your thinking about this way too much. The only....and I mean ONLY thing that matters here is that you are doing something that you enjoy. Me for example at 27, I've been wet shaving for about 6 years now, smoking a pipe for about 5, mow my yard with a reel mower, love flat caps, throw yoyos, grow my own peppers, bla bla bla. Why? Because I enjoy it.....period,the end. Who cares what's "hip","trendy","old school", etc.

    3 main reasons

    1. I've gotten kinda sick of being the band t-shirt and jeans kinda guy. I work construction so Im grubbed up all day, and just decided to start dressing a little nicer the rest of time. Also cause I rock sweaters like no ones business and it just seems to fit my style. The mustache just fits and I've had one on and off for years. After Movember this year I just kept it!

    2. I've been an avid cigar smoker for 10yrs now and my local store is about 50% cigar/50% pipe based and they have been bugging me to try it for years. Finally a few months ago they sat me down and explained that Pipe smoking is cheaper then cigar smoking(Except for the pipe its self) and the variety of tobacco is just as big as the selection of cigars and I tried it and was hooked!

    3. The majority of guys around my town are typically Rig pigs and construction workers and I found my self falling into that grouping cause of the way i acted and my attitude in general and decided to change it. There are very few "gentleman" These days it seems and I've just deiced to try and bring some of that back at least into my personal life, Some say it's growing up ha ha but that makes me feel old

Like a fine wine I'm slowly maturing ha ha

Guess I should have mentioned I work in the oilfield . And get yourself a corn cob pipe, something no pipe smoker should be without......in my opinion at least.

I've been told that I have an "old soul" since about the age of 16. My college roommate used to ask, "have you always been 50 years old?" Even though I'm 20 years older than you, I suppose I would have been called a "hipster" if people used the term back then. I much prefer the term "classic." I suppose it's a result of a father that was 43 at the time of my birth, but I learned A LOT about "classic" style from him. Everything from manners (which unfortunately is far to rare these days) to being able to play a gentleman's game of golf & tennis, to shawl collar tuxedos, the ability to tie a tie (both straight and bow) to wet shaving, etc. My advice, for what it's worth, is to find your own style and not worry about labels.
