Got my son and daughter both Browning pocket clip lock blade knives for Christmas. One pink, one blue. They had them out the other day on the front porch whittling while I smoked a pipe and I schooled them on the does and don'ts in regard to useage and abuse. My son said "Dad, I cut myself". Looked over and it was a pinprick of a cut and a small dot of blood. You lives you learns.

With my first pen knife I cut my finger to the bone.
It snapped shut with my finger between the blade and the handle.
That in itself didn't do any harm, as little blades don't 'chop' through skin.

It was when I yanked my finger from underneath the blade in the moment of panic

I waited till my son was 7 and daughter was 10 till I gave them pocket knives. I started getting pocket knives when I was 4 (I look at my 4 yo son and couldn't imagine it) from my Dad. My hands look like road maps because of it. Lines and scars and hunks of flesh removed. That is why I sat them down and let them know is a tool. It's not a pry bar or a weapon, it is a tool. People ask me when they see my pocket clip knife in my pocket if I am carrying it for protection. I am quick to tell them "no, the knife is a tool I use for work and opening things up". Then I alert them to the pistol stuck in my pants and explain to them that is for protection.
