Any North Carolinians here?
Seriously considering moving to Jacksonville to be near our son and grandkids. How do you all like it there? I have been in CA all my life (51 years) and its time for a change.
My son is a Drill Instructor in the United States Marine Corps at Parris Island, SC

A good chunk of the family is there, heading toward Winston/Salem for Easter.
I would have no quams about moving that way if I needed or wanted to. Now as far as weather and such, the area you move to will matter.

I love it! I'm from NJ originally, lived in MI,OH,SC,and PA. as well. Weather here is nice four seasons, normally a nice long, very nice Spring and Fall,an abbreviated rather mild Winter, and hot Summer. The people are friendly and the livin' is easy as they say. Contact me if you have any questions.

Thanks guys. This would be Jacksonville as I said and we would be renting our son's house from him while he is stationed at Parris Island, SC which is about a 5-1/2 hr drive.

Don't know about Jacksonville-I assume that's down towards the coastal plain? I'm from Asheville in the western mountains, one of the prettiest places on earth in my opinion. Get up there if you ever can (though the NC coast has a wild beauty all its own).

I have lived in VA or NC most of my life. Honestly, I like it here for a host of reasons. Mainly my family members are either in VA or NC. Also, there is so much of our history (US) that occurred here.

Thanked: 247Plenty of my soldiers found the 2.5 hour drive to Jacksonville more than worth their time. I never went there myself, but based on that, I'm guessing it's fairly full of young drunk kids. But Fayetteville had plenty of drunk kids running around too, and I really liked it there. I just didn't go out after dark, or on weekends. lol.

I think Doc was from North Carolina. He hasn't been online for quite some time, but perhaps his email is still valid.

Doc and Martha are both out in the Ashville NC area.
I spent a decade living in Charlotte and liked it a lot but we really missed good weather (cold and snow) and for other reasons we wanted to be near the family so we came back north. After the kids are all done with schooling .... the hills of NC are a good place for retirement... they do not get the weather extremes.
Not sure about the area of CA you are in but Fayetteville is humid and hot generally may through September but efficient A/C will keep you sane indoors.
you will find lower taxes, cheaper tobacco products and simpler gun laws (at least they used to be... my 1st pistol license there cost $25, then you paid another $25 for the concealed stamp and a final $25 if you wanted a silencer too, ahh the good old days)
