A question about Private Property

You might as well resign yourself to the idea of a gate. I am in a similar situation: my driveway is a bit over 1900 feet long. Even though there are only two more driveways before the access road dead ends, meaning not much traffic, people would drive on in, sometimes coming right up to turnaround in front of my house. When I asked them what the %@$* they thought they were doing, the most common answer was "I didn't see the signs" followed by "We were just looking around." I would give them the "There's always at least one person on the property, armed, so it would be a very bad idea to come back after dark" speech but it didn't seem to register on most of them. Soo.. I have to put up with the inconvenience of a gate because The Other Guy is an inconsiderate moron.

We have to accept the fact that people just don't read signs and most think that rules don't apply to them anyway. I don't think that most people are deliberately inconsiderate, they are simply unaware that there are other people in the world. It's a sad sign of the times.

So what's the literacy rate again in North Idaho? :)

Spike strips in the road, it'd be an invisible, effective gate that you can open on close when you leave or when others are arriving...you could then get kickback from local towing companies as well. It'd lighten the mood a little and teach people a lesson.

Would this work for ya Glen? I think they might get the point! :gwh:

It's everywhere, unfortunately. That he lives in N Idaho in this instance is just happenstance in regards to people being oblivious and inconsiderate.

Funny you say that, there are two "Access Points" to some property on the South side of the road which actually is "For Sale" I think many of the idiots are from that but even before it was for sale we had issues...

These access points are Skidder trails from logging, but many times people think they are driveways, I have pulled 3 out of there with the Kubota just this Spring...
I finally called the listing Realtor and explained no more freebies, if I have to start the tractor it costs $100 now :)

I see no sign that says that the road is a private driveway. We have a lot of dirt roads that are a continuation of a paved road in my neck of the woods because the county doesn't want to spend the money to pave them. Signs on the side of the road just notates that once off the road one would be on private property. Your pics don't show the private road part...... People being people like to just drive around and look at the woods....you never know.

At the risk of sounding like a moron myself, I too would probably violate your privacy, thinking that those signs are referring to the property on both sides of your private access road. If, however, the signs read "Private Road--No Trespassing" I would make an effort to get turned around asap and make a speedy exit. Your only real solution to those who choose to ignore your signs is probably what you've already identified--a gate of some kind.

I had a friend who got lost in Delaware once after exiting the interstate and began driving down a very long road that had every appearance of being a state highway. They drove several miles before noticing guard stations at intervals on both side of the road--with armed watchmen in them--just before a Delaware State Highway Patrol car overtook and pulled them over. The officer explained that the road they were traveling on was private. In fact, it was the access road to one of the E. I. DuPont family's estates.
