That came out nice! Did she let you keep it for all the work you put into it?

I thank you for the compliment! As far as 'keeping it' I wouldn't think of it!! It's an heirloom and rightfully belongs to and should stay in the family! If you look at post #16 you will see that I presented the blade to her in a very old fashioned and gentlemanly fashion!

Thanked: 10Really a nice story! For the cleanup did you unscaled the blade?

No, I didn’t unpin the razor. I just worked around the scales. There were jimps that extended between the scales and they aren’t as nice as I’d have liked them to be. If there aren’t any jimps I can usually work some Wet &Dry sandpapers between the scales and Mothers or MASS on a Q-tip to clean it up fairly nice! It’s also amazing how much work an old toothbrush will do in areas like that.
Here again I only offered to ‘clean it up’ and hone it. Perhaps in a couple of years, I’ll be up to actually trying to be more advanced. As far as being a ‘restorer’ I’ll leave that up to Glen and others! I know the limits of my talent my patience and pocket book!!
One thing that I'll add is that the blade looks much nicer in real life!

Some have asked about Newspaper articles and such about the cleanup and honing of the woman's great grandfather's straight razor.
Upon the woman's recommendation I wrote an Letter to the Editor of the local paper. It was published on 8/20/2013. She sent me this link. However I don't know if it will work for you as the paper has limited how those who aren't full time subscribers can access what was published (5 visits).
With that said, I 'Think' that you will be able to see it at least once! I've 'visited' too many times and I can't even see my own letter!
I do hope that those who can open and see it will do so!

Anyone can write a letter to the Editor regardless of whether or not you are a subscriber! Here's the link to the paper!

IF YOU DO WRITE A LETTER TO MY LOCAL PAPER Please use the same Gentleman's decorum that is expected here at SRP!!!
If you do write, please let me know and I'll do my best to have others watch for your letter and I will then in turn let you know so you can see it if you wish!
Sorry I forgot to tell you that you 'should' receive a notice from the Editor telling you that he had received your letter!
Your letter should be published within a few days after being received and no longer than a week.
Another thought that came to mind and that would be to include your location/such as the UK/Oregon State here in the US etc!
It's just a thought!Last edited by cudarunner; 08-22-2013 at 08:04 AM.

Wade & Butcher brought back to life
I have a Wade & Butcher I bought for the scales only, the blade was rusted up like that one. One day I thought about cleaning the blade up, so I did & although it had some minor pitting left on it, it turned out good. I had another pair of scales I wasn't using so I put it in them & it fit. A friend of mine who is into straight razors came over & asked if he could hone it for me, so I gave it to him to hone. A couple days later he sent me a text of the blade popping a hair. He shaved with it & said it was one of the best shaves he ever had so he brought it back to me & it being a wedge, was shining like a mirror where he honed it. I shaved with it & it has been in my rotation now & it gives one of the best shaves out of all my razors, I love it!
What a wonderful thing you did & it reminds me of mine, the condition it was in before. You did a great job, well done!

Thank you and my compliments on your work. I find that there's nothing wrong with leaving a little bit of heart/soul and battle scars just like Glen did for my great grandfather's W&B;
