14/8 Custom Straight Razor Near Wedge Old Style Huge
Good Evening,
It was requested of me by one of our fine members, Ace, that I create something reminiscent of the old style razors but bigger in proportion and very wedge like. After providing some of his ideas and concepts, here is what I came up with. The steel is o1 and was hand forged to shape on the anvil from a piece of 3/4 x 1 1/2 inch stock. I then worked it on the stones and belts. I decided to use a jet black paper Micarta for the scale because of its stability and similarities to the look of horn. The wedge is Corian Butter Cream White. The spine is a but over 1/2" and the blade about 3 3/4. Stacked stainless washers and pins. This "Grand Daddy" of a razor is surprisingly manageable while shaving, considering its size. The grind is hollowed but only enough to make honing a little easier.
This was a challenging project for me in many respects and certainly one of the largest that I have worked on. I really enjoyed it and appreciate all of the great ideas and inspiration (Ace) provided in his vision to bring it to fruition. I included a bunch of photos and hope you enjoy them.
Have a good week!
Best Regards
Ken
