George Johnson ca. 1830-1840 Restore
Here is a 5/8 G. Johnson. I believe this is from the period of approximately 1830-1840 based on a picture Manah posted in another thread of a razor that he owns. The original scales for this razor were just like his...faux tortoise with unusual scalloped washers that look like flowers.
Unfortunately the original scales were in very poor condition and are going to take a while to restore and recondition. I decided to try the razor in some other scales that I have restored and I really liked the look of this set with the shape and size of this razor. It just seemed to 'fit': Faux Ivory with a nude woman design. What do you think?

great looking razor you have there. however personally I don't think it dates back as far as 1840s maybe something like 1870s but that is just my opinion and I might be wrong

Thank you...
You could be right of course...but someone else could also be right if they said 1850's, or 1860's or just plain "pre 1891". Part of the wonder and the fun of collecting these older razors is that pinpointing exact dates is more often than not simply guesswork based on certain prove-able historical information that is simply too nebulous to be too exact.
Manah said (in regards to his razor) " 'Seven stars' were granted in 1835. I have the same razor. And it looks like 1835-1840. IMO.... " not I know. Here is a pic of the razor that he was talking about (I hope you don't mind Manah?):
And here is a pic of the scales that my "Johnson" came with:
As I said...it's mostly guesswork, but is also History. That's what i like...

I think pairing the razor with the nudie scales look great. Sexy without being trashy.

No,no,no! My screen name is derived from Natty Bumpo aka Deerslayer aka Leatherstockings from the James Fenimore Cooper novels.

Thanked: 1184That turned out real nice. You going to pin it with the nude ? :<0) I have a 7 star but my stars are arranged different. 4 on top and 3 under in a arch/rainbow kind of look. What do you think about a 4 star? Earlier or later ?
Good judgment comes from experience, and experience....well that comes from poor judgment.

Hey Pups! Yeah I am really considering a permanent match of these scales with this razor. Although the scales are not 'period specific' for the razor, they really fit nice. Elegant looking and they balance in the hand really well with this razor. It's a great shaver! Looks much better than the pics...I'll show it to you next meet up.
As to your 'G. Johnson'...I'd like to see it. Shoot me a PM and attach a picture. Hard to say if it is earlier or later without at least a look-see.
