W&B American #2 of the 7 day set
G'day all,
a bit more traditional with my 3rd resto.
This is going to be the 2nd member of my 6/8" to 7/8" 7 day set I intend to make up the justify my RAD
Blade - Wade & Butcher - American Razor 13/16" square point
I wanted to retain the aged character so only gave the blade a hand polishing with Autosol metal polish (no sanding)
Scales - I made the scales from light horn slabs (from robsbits on Ebay in the UK)
Cheeted & used the linisher at work for the bulk material removal the wet & dry from grits 320, 600, 800, 1200, 1500, 3000 & 4000 then a polishing with a eucalyptus & bees wax wood polish to see how it geos
Wedge – this is black horn from the original broken scale to keep a bit more of the original memories, probably should have used lead or brass for the extra weight to balance it but I like the contrast of the black
Pins etc – Brass coned washers, brass thrust washer made from 10 thou shim, brass pins.
Honing - still pops arm hairs but yet to rehone it fully and shave but I can see a new favourite comming into play.
Original ebay photo - forgot to take before photos

Thanked: 1Nice job! Did you make both sides of the scales out of one blank from robsbits or did it take 2?

yes Zack both scales came from 1 slab 60mm*160mm*5mm
since I made these scales fairly short compared to the originals I have about a 16mm x 60mm piece off 1 end that I can use for wedges later which the original rounded wedge shape would have used up also.
I recon you could maybe get 3 smaller hieght scales from 1 slab actually if you had a scroll or band saw and aternate the thick & thin ends to minimise the waste but as I only use a large belt sander (at work) for the bulk material removal I only get 2 scales
final thickness came out about 3mm (1/8")
I have done another set of longer & taller scales with the black horn slab also the same size that just fit 2 sides in it when cut it on a slight angle to fit the larger ends on it to the thin ends.
works about $6-$9 for materials (to Aus) per scale set
I would say took about 3 or so hours to make them from scratch, lapping the blank on 1 side to make flat for the inside, then draw, cut blank, tape together, rough shape & then hand sand then polish, took longer mainly because after i got to the 1500 grit and gave a quick polish to check progress I noticed some earlier grit scratches still so had to go back over them again
more dilegence with checking as I go would have saved a half hour or so.Saved,
to shave another day.

Very nice! I like the idea of salvaging the old horn for new wedge. After the set is complete I volunteer to test the set for a month or so....
