A small tip for you, try wedges instead of spacers .
Spacers cause the scales to bow in after time, wedges do not.
A very nice job on the GD! Pretty expensive though, I get mine for $4 ";"
Nice Job!
I had a couple GDs a while back. The steel isn't that bad mostly bad grinding and the bevel was terrible. After replacing the scales, doing some grinding work on the shoulder and heel then completely re-setting the bevel they didn't shave bad.
For the money if you don't mind doing some work they can be decent inexpensive shavers.
nice work. wait til the purpleheart oxidizes, it turns a gorgeous purple brown with some black graining.
Chev that's a pretty result! I have a small pile of GDs here just awaiting some inspiration before I grind them into interesting lines and practice spine work. I'm curious how long the steel holds the edge though. Let us know how it is after about 15 or 20 shaves - at the risk of rekindling the "GDs are the seed of Satan" debate, it may be useful to know how long they actually hold an edge on average.
Didn't know about the purpleheart oxidizing - how long does that take Tiddle? Chev if you notice the wood starting to change color please post some pix, I don't think I've seen that before. The lines in purpleheart are interesting but the intensity of the purple is not my cup-o-tea. If they turn more brown that could be interesting!
I like that purple, looks good. I think you did a great job.
