That should mean that the rod would not fill out the hole in the razor properly.

The kind of hole you're talking about is only really seen on modern razors. Holes only became the small round pinholes with modern manufacturing; on older razors, the smith would punch out the hole during forging. Generally, the holes could be quite large compared to the holes in the scales, and sometimes even square; they are highly irregular.

Nice work. The ivory and wedge combination starts to grow on me.

Well, the blade is still mine (I originally bought it from you) just getting it professionally redone.

Progressive sanding then polish.
