Default Handle making (for the first time)

Hi all, I'll be making my first pair of scales in a few days.

    I need a little advice.

I have a Filarmonica and a Tuckmar with synthetic handles

    which are 3 mm thick.

Should I buy blocks of horn or bone in that thickness?

Should I buy blocks less or more thick if not synthetic?

What about the wedges? What kind of material do you recommend and how

thick do they have to be ?

I did try the Google search but I didn't find any helpful threads.

I hope you guys haven't replied to similar threads a million times.

    I'd appreciate any help.

    Thanks.

They should match what's on the razor very close except for what ever material you use. Wood may require a spacer instead of a wedge and copy the wedge that's in the razor if you use anything other than wood. You want to test pin everything to make sure it works before you do a final pin. Unless you have enough experience to know what works but even then.

Good judgment comes from experience, and experience....well that comes from poor judgment.

Here are a lot of answers: http://straightrazorpalace.com/works...wers-here.html

As for the thickness of scales, in my opinion that depends entirely on the weight and flexibility of the material. If scales are not flexible, the razor will not open and close smoothly. You should be able to pinch them like this:

As for the wedge/spacer, I would always choose a wedge over a spacer, independent of the material.
