So this epoxy is specially formulated for wood on metal bonding?

most epoxy I've used, including 5 minute, id recommend cleaning both mating surfaces with acetone or alcohol (unless one or both surfaces are not solvent resistant), plus scuff the surfaces, especially the metal well to give some bite.

That's what I did. The problem was a combination of too little epoxy and or clamping which squeezed it out so there wasn't enough. The holes were a way to be absolutely sure I wouldn't have to do it a fourth time. Too little epoxy and I could pull the brass off like peeling a banana. Sadly I did have a good bond the first time but had to remove the brass with heat to mend the crack..
