Thanked: 49Please excuse what is perhaps a stupid question but what is a welded blade?

The blade is made up from layers of two types of steel that are welded together. It is not welding in the traditional sense with a welder, but the metal blanks were stacked on each other then heated in a forge, then squashed till they are in full contact, then heated till the pieces of metal stick/or weld themselves together. After the layers turn into one homogeneous chunk, it is then hammered out and folded in on itself to double the number of layers. It is also called damascus steel.
Mike Blue could give a better description, he is the one who made this pattern welded steel.
Here is a good thread, it explains better than I could.

It reminds of a huge ferocious beast, Charlie! You have a gift to make them seem 'alive'! Nice work!

I rest my case.
