Several years ago I was given this whale vertabrea, is this what u were using?

That's quite a piece you have there.
But no, that's not what I used. I tend to think that would behave more like bone instead of Ivory. But bone can be scrimshawed as well as many other materials.

Reminds me of the scene in dumb and dumber when one guy trades an entire van for a minibike and the other guy is impressed.

OK, it doesn't really remind me of that at all, except for the lines that the guy says. In this case, though, there's nothing "dumb or dumber" about it, but some of us see Mark's work on sawmill creek from his day job, and aren't surprised that he would turn out good stuff at a fast rate.

I have been trying to get some ivory and almost had a company in Canada that would sell to me but they said they were not able to ship to the USA. Does anyone have an ivory/whale bone/walrus tusk contact that I could legally purchase some scraps from. Thanks a lot and am holding my breath in anticipation to get to work with some of this. P.S. faux ivory doesn't work that great for thin detail work, it kept cracking.

What's the name of the company in Canada? I've been in contact with a few company's with no luck.

Is the piece of faux ivory you have acrylic? Or is it just very thin.

I only ask because I'm using the same technique to redo some faded stampings on some acrylic scales.

You can get a variety of ivories at Boone trading . They have small pieces that would be just right for this.
And google searches show several. I know some have found it on eBay though they can't list it as Ivory. But it can be found there as I know guys who have bought it.

This is sort of cr*ppy looking but I'm playing to see just what it takes to work this stuff.
Once I compose an actual scene , and learn the techniques , it'll improve instead of working off the cuff.

Thanks for the info, I don't think the faux ivory is acrylic based but I could be wrong. It feels like an epoxy resin.
