Excellent Tom - the scales were probably from the pressings they used to make silver handles for knife and fork canteens of cutlery - two halves silver-soldered together, then the tang inserted after filling the hollow handle with that knifemakers glue. A friend made some for me once - a mixture of brick dust, pitch and resin. You heat it up and it goes pretty solid.
Love the little pot. Dates from either William Hawcroft seniors time (father of Isaac who in turn was father to another William) or after the partnership of Isaac and son William was dissolved.
