Thanked: 51st Restoration: No Home Run, But A Standup Double!
I'm about 2 months into straights/shavettes. I had my best SR shave to date this morning with a razor I restored myself!
So far, I've used 2 shave ready razors from reputable vendors and have achieved nice, bloodless shaves. I've devoured videos and reading on restoration and honing, and wanted to give it a try...
This Jones Manufacturing razor is a 5/8 and about half hollow. I got it slightly rusted, but not badly worn with scales trashed as the best in the $10 bunch at a local antique market. A heap of hand sanding did the trick. I replaced the scales (still a little loose). Set the bevel, and did a pyramid with my new Nortons (after lapping). Finished up with a Guangxi natural stone and 100 laps on the strop...It worked! Equal to my reference blades, and maybe a tad sharper!
This site is an amazing resource, all the way from selecting a recoverable blade to getting it back in service.Last edited by Bentlink; 11-08-2014 at 08:39 PM. Reason: Spelling

Good for you & well done on the research as well.

Thanked: 4827It is nice when we start to become a little self sufficient and can measure our success. Congratulations on the restore and hone. I have always been very good with my hands and tools, but there have been a few new skills here that I was surprised at how long they took me to get better at. That is a good looking first go for sure.
