Thanked: 4206Wosti weekend one piece set.
Hi gents. Tried Sapele from Africa this go round, finished them in tru oil gun stock finish for the first time as well. Nice stuff to work with.
Made these matched this time and made one pin set brass, the other nickel.
I need to find an appropriate little weekend case for them and really like the way this particular woods grain catches the light at different angles.
Probably a few decades age difference between these blades, but they work well as a set, both being IXL's. can't wait to hone them up and test them out.

Thanked: 4206Thank you kindly gents,,
It's a learning curve Andrew fer sure but they are fun to make until they snap.
My lad got a job at a lumber yard in Erin so he's brought his old man some mahogany, walnut, and maple to play with this winter as well. Enough to make a few sets with matched brushes if I get my lathe working..

Thanked: 4206Not a lot of experience with it prior to these scales. But to me, it was a soft hardwood.
Easy to sand and shape. From Wikipedia searching I read it was big in the guitar world and small curio box veneers. I can see how the grain shading would work in both of those applications quite well. I have enough to try to turn a brush or two out of it still so am looking forward to that trial too.
Thanks again for the feedback gents.
Much appreciated by this novice..

Great job Mike
The Sapele looks like some kind of cousin to mahogany to me. The grain is really similar.

Thanked: 4206Thanks Mike
Mahogany and Sapele are pretty similar, cousins is a pretty close description I think.
Honed up the pair and test shaved tonight. Three days growth, and the older Wosti mowed through very well. A two pass shave that was DFS. Stiffer blade than a full hollow German, and very nice results.
Happy with the first one, will find out how the other shaves tomorrow..
