Puma 222 5/8 Silber
Hi.
Beautiful razor in excellent condition. Unfortunately doesn’t belong to me. Restored for a friend of mine. I own Puma 222 Silber razor but this one is different. The blade is engraved and it was made of Pumaster Steel. I have never find any information about what Pumaster Steel actually is but for sure it was Puma’s premium stuff. Some say it was Sheffield steel, who knows?

I have some earlier Pumas with Kayser-Ellison Silver steel, some with Pumamaster. The old Puma fixed blade and folding knives were Pumamaster as far back as I've seen and then switched to 'Super Keen Stainless Steel.' I always preferred the Pumamaster.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Very interesting. So far i have seen Pumas made of Pumaster steel (both carbon and stainless) and best Puma-Steel. I wonder is that really means something or is it just marketing.

Good question. At one time Kayser-Ellison seems to have been the 'hot' commodity for Solingen razors. I've seen them in Puma, Bartmann, Carbo-Magnetic, Craftsman Sta-Sharp and others from that era. I'm thinking it was pre WWII but it could have been afterwards, Kayser-Ellison was around into the '60s or later AFAIK. There was a period, after the Germans had perfected hollow grinding, when you would see razors stamped, and or advertised, as Sheffield Steel, Ground in Solingen.

I think you're right. It is like trying to guess country of origin by just shaving, without seeing actual razorHaving shaved with examples of all of the above, I cannot tell the difference between any of them where the razor meets the whiskers. All good.
