Smile I was just gonna shine the 9TE5 a bit…

I got this inexpensive fair looking 9TE5 H. Boker & Co 11/16" off the SRP classifieds two weeks ago to start learning/practicing honing.

Being a former Marine I had to shine it up a little bit first. I started squaring this puppy away and the next thing I know I’ve got it in pieces. Image that.

It had a bent pin & tang and the blade edge touched scales a little. The bent tang with two tapers with the scales splayed to match the taper took forever to figure out. I had to re-drilled the pin hole five times before I got the blade right. Ground/reshaped the heel to match the excessive toe ware to try and square things up. Softened the point a little for I'm still to new the SR shaving.

Is there a way to straighten the bent tang if there is I'll redo it in a heart beat?

How'd I do for my first un-planned re-furbish (all by hand no power tools)?

Now I am apprehensive about learning to hone on this nice looking razor but I will.

That's a ripple not a hole from the old original washer & pin which ended up 1/16" off after squaring bade to scales.

    Great job mate
    I have straightened 1 blade
It was a 1" ATOR max blade thickness was about 3mm (1/8") full length
Had a bent tang just had to hit and hope
Had a piece of soft wood either side of the bend strike area and went at it gingerly at first then bit harder until right but lots of strikes rather than over board straight up
It worked for me but your results may vary
    Saved,
    to shave another day.

That is a great candidate for learning to hone. Straightening a bent tang is a very advanced procedure and should be left to people more skilled than I am.

There is a method for cold straightening a tang buried on the the site somewhere, I think. Not knowing any better I used it twice to straighten tangs and it worked. You do stand a very good chance of snapping the tang though.

Not buried as far as I thought http://straightrazorpalace.com/srpwi...lade_Centering under "Vise Adjustment".

Joe Lewis method using heat bloc paste and propane torch. I used his method on a old Sheffield that had a severe twist in the tang. The paste is available at welding supply shops and at amazon.

Lately I have been doing this without the paste, just being careful where I point the flame and using the vise as a heat sink.

I'd say this has a reasonable chance of success on a Sheffield, but on typical german razors, you'll end up owning both pieces, as they say

    Thanks for the advice everyone.

I've since decided to keep as is. I'd break for sure. Har!

It is smaller and lighter than most, why I got it to learn honing. Oddly enough it has become my favorite razor and I get the most comfortable shave with it.
