Thanked: 5chipped with crack
Good evening I've acquired a FROMM straight razor blade that had been chipped at the store and never used I picked it up for $40. and after removing three of the chips came to one chip that has a hair line crack that you can only see with the 30 power loupe I'm using. Does anyone think that this razor would be safe to shave with after bevel setting and honing?
thanks James

Thanked: 13245Have you checked the crack ???
if it is through bevel on both sides then, No I would not put that on my Hollywood Face
To check the edge you flex it on your thumb nail NOT a TNT but watch this vid at exactly 5:35 & 5:43 in to see what I mean
When the bevel flexes it will show you really fast how bad the crack is..Last edited by gssixgun; 03-12-2015 at 03:58 AM.

Pics would help, but off hand I would say don't risk it. Cracks will usually get bigger with use and need to be removed.

Thank you very much GSSIXGUN the blade flexes with the thumb nail test but i stopped removing the chipped area after seeing the crack (on both sided of the blade running up from the crack) i certainly don't want the area opening up while shaving.
Though i would ask for some advice from someone who knows. By the way it was your post on the edge bevelling methods that led me to this forum so thanks for your expertise and keep up the great articles you have certainly made my knowledge base grow.Last edited by armourpc; 03-12-2015 at 04:17 AM.

Probably a workshop thread here, but if I may add this....Want to find a crack in a thinly-ground razor with chip(s) on the edge?
Simple! Push on the edge at the chip! You shall find a crack posthaste! All chips should be high-angle honed out or breadboarded to remove all chips prior to 'pushing' on the edge. This is not the thumbnail test. This is the crackmaking procedure! YMMV
Cracks begin as chips. Bummer about the razor. Fromms are very good, yet very thin!
Best of luck!"Don't be stubborn. You are missing out."
I rest my case.
