Which direction are you wanting to taper heel > tail or spine > edge?

This should probably be up in "the forge".

I think a length of metal with a hinge at the base, and the working end up by the platen. Maybe a pin to register the pivot hole and a couple of toggle clamps to hold it.

Your machine designs are so well thought out, you will do something spiffy, I will be jealous again

I was thinking a linear carriage with a holder for the blade with a pivot pin in the front and a corresponding hole in the tool rest so I can swing it to do both sides without removing it from the tool holder it will also allow me to set a definitive angle allowing me to make a symmetrical grind I would be grinding from end of tang towards the plunge cut I will send photos when complete. Please let me know if you plan a get together I am looking forward to a good steak.

My advice: don't bother. Freehanding is really not that difficult after a couple of tries.
I keep the edge upwards so I can see the angle between the platen and the edge, and it is fairly easy to do both sides and keep it symmetrical. At some point I put on a couple of temps scales to help me verify and fine tune if necessary.
To be honest, this is one of the easier things to freehand.

And also with some designs, such as extended monkey tails, tapering the entire length may not be doable.
