Patriot in Damascus
Another one in O2/L6 Damascus. Over 8/8 in size.
This one is called The Patriot. It is a very bold blade, compact, with an attitude. It obviously needed Red White and Blue kirinite scales.
As an experiment, I wanted to try something to 'make it all work together'. I removed the fire scales from the spine, but didn't sand away the thin decarburized layer, because this way the spine would show little white specs after etching, symbolizing the stars on the RWB flag (the scales).
As expected, I didn't get a uniform start pattern, but It kinda worked. Not sure if I can call it a complete success. I could sand it off an re-etch it uniform without the white spots. what do you think?

Maybe a better idea than it worked. It's hard to tell for me without seeing it in person. I might leave it for a while and if you find yourself always explaining it to people take that as a sign that it didn't really work.
I just now went back to the picture, read the spots as stars, and the whole thing worked for me, but I'm not sure that that would have ever happened without reading the description first.
Edit; Just went back again. I'm leaning towards it working.Last edited by bluesman7; 07-25-2015 at 12:18 AM.

IMHO, it looks like something is amiss.

I am leaning towards sanding it off and etching it whole. The problem is that unless you know why it was done, you can't help but think it was a botched etch. It's like having to explain a joke. If you have to explain before people get it, you've done it wrong.

I ground the spine clean and did the etching again. Now it looks even and clean. Ah well. Not all ideas pan out.
