Higgins shorty in Bog Oak
I cleaned up and polished the blade , now shorter, in the usual way. But for the scales something different was requested. And it had to be natural and unique.
Bog Oak was chosen. If you're not familiar with it it is anywhere from 3-6000 yrs old as it's been buried in peat bogs in England and as few other places. It's on it's way to becoming fossilized amd
the acidic water turns the oak anywhere from brown to this nearly black color .
Staying with the natural theme I used a piece of ivory which looks nice against the black .
In these pics it looks almost like black horn but in person you can see grain .
The last 2 photos show the bare wood to give you an idea of what it looks like.

I like the looks of the wood.
The razor is of course perfect as per your usual work.

Thank you gentlemen.
Even though a woodworker I wasn't too familiar with the wood. A bit of research indicates during the 19th century it was used a bit for jewelry as well as turnings and inlays for furniture .One guy told me it was also used for pipes .
Interesting stuff. Another wrinkle for my brain.

Really nice restoration!
Is the bog oak readily available or rare and hard to come by?

Easy to find on EBay or etsy. Most is from across the pond as they say. Reasonable for what it is.
