A relatively modern Electric Train Transformer with a DC output or an old one with a rectifier added into the line would be best. A cheap Voltmeter attached could check the voltage.

I completely forgot about those! I think my new cell phone uses a 2 amp. I do believe the newest USB's can handle 3 amps, Apple's new laptops use them for charging I think. Probably safer than my suggestions.... Might be able to cut a usb cable to connect your leads?
