Default Gd regrind and denim micarta scales

Hi guys, just thought I'd share this with you all.
I got bored and decided to try my hand at regrinding a gold dollar, and making my own scales. I used 3m fiberglass resin, and blue jeans to make the micarta, and a dremel with metal grinding stones to do the gd grinding.
On shaping the scales I used a large sanding drum attachment on my hand drill, and wet dry sand paper, by hand. I'm not thru yet, but I thought it looked pretty decent for a first attempt. I'm still going to thin out the scales, they're a bit thick, and the blade needs some more refining, but its getting there! Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.thanks guys! Very cool idea. Like the idea of making it all from scratch.

Yeah I thought it would be fun, I've been wanting to try my hand at making scales from micarta for a while now. I feel like I could have done a few things a little different in the making of the micarta, but overall it wasn't hard. Next time I'll make the micarta slab a bit thinner to start. I wasn't sure how strong it would be tho....It's very durable and strong. I could most likely make it an eighth inch thick and it would be plenty strong. I'm not really sure what I should use to make the finish on the scales nice and shiny. I'm leaning towards water based urethane of some sort...idk.

With micarta can you sand it the same as wood?

That's basically what I'm doing. I started with 60 grit, then 100+, then 200+, 300+,400,1500, and so far it's been very similar to sanding hard wood.

The idea is to go ahead, and the technology has to be perfected
