Thanked: 1No, the hole does not go through. I would call that a plug. For lack of a better term the material is chiseled out with an engraver to a depth equaling the thickness of material to be inlayed. So this was done on both sides. So you then have a recess to put your fitted inlay into. There a couple more tricks you have to employ in this process to insure the inlay will stay. There is no glue or solder holding these in. It's all mechanical. You can find this done on firearms and quite often on western style bit and spur makers pieces. It is usually done with fine silver or gold. If your alloy is to hard it will not work. With a soft alloy you can chase your precious metal around enough to fill up all fine gaps. I like use techniques from many different sources. Thanks for your interest. Maybe that will give you an idea.
