Thread: Help with a restoration

My mother-in-law got me these the other day and when I looked at them I noticed that all of the scales are broken and need some tender loving care. I wish I had the time to complete the work myself but my profession does not allow me the time. I am looking for someone that does this and will take good care of them. They have some sentimental value to them as they are from a person that has passed on. I would like to get them back to a usable condition so I can display them when I am not shaving with them. Any help with this request would be greatly appreciated. I have attached the blades for your viewing pleasure (or cringe because of the state they are in).

There are several folks on this forum that do that. I have no doubt they'll either post or send you a private message.

You didn't say whether these are family heirlooms or otherwise meaningful to you. If not, you want to make sure they are worth the cost of restoration. Here is a link to someone talking about whether it is worth the money for non-heirlooms.

Broken scales are no problem and they can be replaced. The picture you posted doesn't have enough detail to show everything. The razor in the middle has a lot of rust. It would be a big issue if there were any down by the edge. I see a brown area near the blade edge slightly left of center. If that is rust it could be rough. Also, I can't tell from the pic if that razor has been improperly honed.

I would guestimate restorations at roughly $100 per razor. You can buy very nice vintage razors for that amount from the buy/sell/trade section. Also, under the 'Vendors Corner', there is a 'straight razors for sale' page.

These are from my wife's grandfather that passed away earlier this year. My mother-in-law got them for me as I am the only one that she knows that shaves with a straight razor. I would like to get them back or close to shave ready again for the grandfather and my mother-in-law. I know it would mean a lot to her to see them in that state again.

In that case it is definitely worth it. What a blessing to receive family heirloom razors.
