Thread: An early Greaves & Sons

An early Greaves & Sons 13/16 near wedge circa 1830. I frequently see this blade style with its arris spine on earlier stub tail razors. This distinct style spine allows the glaze finished blade faces and crocus finished spine and tang to really stand out. A fancy little blade with top and bottom jimps and a nice thin even bevel as it would have had when it originally left the factory. The scales are faux tortoise made from a polyester material. They more closely resemble the dyed horn scales the Sheffield makers were so fond of using. The scales are thin at .110. Flat and fairly straight with a bevel around the edges as commonly found from this time period. The lead wedge and brass pins and collars complete the razor.
The blade as received is pictured. Although the blade stamp was not struck evenly it was very deep allowing it to be saved in the restoration. Note the heavy corrosion along the bevel.
