brittle is the wrong word. It is pretty strong and tough.
However it is very easy to abrade and it is easy to leave deep scratch marks.
The one thing you have to be very careful with is heat. Get it too hot while sanding and you get permanent discoloration.Til shade is gone, til water is gone, Into the shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath.

You can use etching liquid that computer guys use to etch their motherboards. That helps make a great contrast to Damascus steel.
