    brittle is the wrong word. It is pretty strong and tough.
    However it is very easy to abrade and it is easy to leave deep scratch marks.
    The one thing you have to be very careful with is heat. Get it too hot while sanding and you get permanent discoloration.

    Cheers Bruno, it's definitely a material that I would like to have a go at, but it is just so expensive here in the uk that I would not want to mess it up thanks Ed.

    You can use etching liquid that computer guys use to etch their motherboards. That helps make a great contrast to Damascus steel.

    That would be ferric chloride. works great on damascus, not so much on wootz.
