Default 8/8 SanMai with mammoth ivroy

    Hi folks,

this blade has a quarter hollow grind. The not stainless steel is a SanMai with a mittle layer from 1.2442, hardness: 63 HRC. The outer layers are from 1.2842 and 75Ni8. The Scales are handcrafted from my last piece of mammoth ivory. The wedge is from buffalo horn, all with adjustable pivots.

That looks great! I love the way that the mammoth ivory scales almost look like tusks too, great piece of work.

Can you explain this to me? What is SanMai and what do all the numbers mean? 63HRC is the only thing I understand.

The number are the european code for the used steels:
1.2842 is similar to O2 - the black part of the blade.
75Ni8 is a bandsaw steel with approx. 2 % nickel - the silver stripes in the blade
1.2442 is a low alloy tool steel, exclusivly made bei Achim Wirtz, to his specifications. It is more or less similar to japanese Aogami 1 steel. For me one of the best steels that you can get in the moment.

Thanks to all for the kind coments.

Very nice razor that obviously has a lot of time put into it. What I love about the scales is they look more like aged elephant ivory than fossil like a lot of the mammoth ivory does.
