Thomas Ellin & Co. Vulcan Cast Steel restoration
Fresh off the workbench is this Thomas Ellin & Co., Vulcan Cast Steel. I made the macassar ebony scales for it, homemade solid brass dome collars, nickel silver pins, and used the original lead wedge. I didn't use any finish on the scales, opting to leave them "raw" as this wood is very dense and oily enough to protect itself. So it has a nice warm, natural feel in hand and the hope is that they develop a "hand worn" look over time. I do enjoy these "rattler" grinds with the slight smile. It was finished on the yellow/green side of the thuringian in the picture. I should be set for a terrific shave in the near future. Thanks for checking it out....

That's a beautiful razor and an awesome restoration.
I love that grind.
Looks better than new, I'm sure.

Nicely done. Is there a finish on the wood? Ebony is oily and should hold up to water on its own I think. Maybe just some good wax.

Thanks for the kind words and encouragement, fellas!
@Karl, that's right, there is no finish on the ebony. I figured it was plenty oily enough on it's own and it just has a nice natural feel that way too. I just sanded to a high grit then I rubbed it with a scrap of linen fire hose to sort of polish it."Go easy"

Thanked: 89Another amazing transformation! I was expecting to see your signature satin finish, but the full mirror probably works better with this particular style of grind. Just superb and perfect scales to boot.
