W. Greaves Acier Fondu
Acier Fondu. French meaning 'Cast Steel'. An early W. Greaves dating 1800 - 1810. William Greaves specialized in razors and was listed on Burgess St. in 1787 (trade mark 'Greaves'). His sons Edward and Richard joined the firm in 1801 becoming William Greaves & Sons. The building of the famous 'Sheafs Works' began in 1823. The 6/8 blade is very close to a true wedge. It is restored to what I believe is its original glazed finish. The scales were originally dyed a mottled brown which is mostly faded away. Very dry and delaminated they were soaked in neatsfoot oil as part of the restoration process to add some life back to the horn. The original pins were .020 larger than what I had available and the holes in the steel collars were even larger. Austin Kennedy's fine stainless steel domed collars were used as a replacement. The original lead wedge was retained.
