14/8 Monster razor
I had a customer for a BIG razor. We started talking at a target range between 10/8 and 11/8. 11/8 became '12/8+' which became 14/8.
I made different pieces of damascus for the different parts of the razor. The overal number of layers in the cross section is about 500 to 1000. It's the biggest 'real' razor I've ever seen. The thickness was kept manageable by having the hollows more like a 10/8, with 4/8 for the spikes on top of the spine. So all in all it's relatively thin and light while still respecting the 4/1 width vs thickness rate.
This was the forged blank. There is a normal sized 15/16 blade for reference.
It's huge, but it handles surprisingly well.

The scales will be made by someone else.

Thanked: 556Some folks refer to razor scales as “handles”. This one looks like it could use a handle with a couple of bicycle handle grips.
It is BIG!David

God almighty-That looks like a weapon The Hound might have used in Game of Thrones! I kinda dig it, though!

Thanked: 38I thought it was a kamisori. Then you mentioned scales and I saw the pivot hole. Think I'd like it better as a kami.

That looks great Bruno. Did you happen to weigh it by chance?

Thanked: 1081Love it!
My only concern would be its practicality. The customer wanted a big ol cleaver and obviously it can shave, but at what stage does it get to be too big for a comfortable shave?
My 9/8" Snail Forge is actually quite nimble but I'm not sure I'd want to go much bigger.
