Default 6/8 Spike Wilbert Cutlery Chicago in Lacewood

This is Wilbert Cutlery 6/8 spike razor. Never heard of them, but sometimes these are the biggest surprises. I have a few vintage US made razors and every one of them shaves as good as or better than a Dovo, and this is no exception. The blade has minor hone ware and was relatively clear of any staining. I gave it a few passes on the buffer to put some shine on it. I decided to put it in a set of lacewood scales with the usual gloss epoxy resin finish. I also used a lacewood wedge to round out the package. I pinned it with 1/16 brass rod stock with brass over stainless washers.

I honed it up, gave it 30 passes on the chromium oxide strop and then leather. I had an idea this was going to be a good shaver when I was honing it. I could feel the steel getting slick as the bevel set and I started working up through the grits. I was correct, it shaves very nice and looks good as well

    Beautiful work there Cannon!

A question though.. I bought a good sized hunk of wood whose grain and coloring look almost identical to that of your scales. The owner of the shop told me that although the wood was marked as lacewood it was actually leopardwood. Do you know if this is a common occurrence, or are there noticeable differences between the two species to look for?

When the grain on lacewood gets tight, the lacing pattern is very tight and uniform, they will call it lepordwood, and charge you more for it, I believe. Don’t hold my feet under the fire on it, but that is what I have been told. I picked this board out of a dozen or two planks just because of the figuring in the wood.

I was going to keep it, until I created this beautiful razor. I just cant bring myself to part with it, so this one will be going into the BST instead. So if you are interested, drop me a PM and get a jump on the BST posts.
