Default 7/8 Round Point Friodur in epoxy Cocobolo

I just finished this one up for another SRP member last night. I decided to snap a few photos before I left for work this morning to catch the early morning light.

It is a NOS 7/8 Friodur round point that I scaled in epoxy resin finished Cocobolo. The photos don’t do the wood justice, one the best looking I have made so far. Deep 3-D look to the grain. I did a little light sanding on the blade to take out some of the grind marks and then ran it down the buffing wheels to polish it. The lighting is not accenting the blade very much; it is shinier than it appears.

I used an olive wood wedge to accent the dark wood and used 1/16 brass rod with a stainless backing washer with a brass washer over it. The blade has nylon over stainless bearings. I honed it up last night and gave it a shave test this morning. Baby bottom smooth, I really like how these Friodurs shave.

I love the look of the cocobolo!

Hard wood with a hefty blade....fantastic!

Thanks, the photos really don’t do it justice. The morning light is soft enough that it cuts down on the glair form the gloss finish. Look at the last photo (razor from the wedge end), you can see the reflection of the little pencil piece in the finish of the scales. I love the looks of the cocobolo, but it is a royal pain to work with. The dust is very toxic and the wood is so oily that something like a shellac or urethane finish will not dry. It stays tacky to the touch. The epoxy adheres nicely and hardens properly. I am going miss this one. It would look nice in my display case.

Lets just make sure she makes it back in the mail!

Fantastic job, Dave! It looks beautiful with the polishing and the epoxied cocobolo scales. I can't wait to get her back!

    Thumbs up Followup...

I just wanted to write a brief post with my thoughts on cannonfodder's work since I got this razor back from him. The epoxied cocobolo scales and installation work he did are just beautiful. These are really nice scales, and the epoxy finish he gave them has a perfect mirror shine and really makes the grain in the wood stand out. He also did a nice job polishing the blade up for me, and honed it up with a great shaving edge.

I finally got in my first shave with it since having gotten it from the post office this week, and I couldn't be happier with it!

This is my first time getting a razor rescaled like this, and was surprised at how quick and painless the process was. I am now thinking of a couple other razors that could benefit from a nice set of new scales!

    Nice work, Dave!
