Thanked: 2I used pure iron on those not old wrought iron, pure in that it is 99.8 percent pure iron. check out Pure Iron -- The Choice For Forging and Ornamental Metal Fabrications
for their description of the metal. The Hitachi steel I got in Japan while vuisiting the shops of bladesmiths.
Yes that is a left hand razor.
They shave as well as my Wade and Butcher, but different. After getting use to the right hand bevel, I really have not
used a left hand one although I thought it would come in handy at first.

I understand the function of soft and hard steel for Japanese weapons but why for smaller items like razors ?
Is it just traditional ?The white gleam of swords, not the black ink of books, clears doubts and uncertainties and bleak outlooks.
